A Veteran Game Director's New Game That Appears Distinct Yet Builds On Core Principles.
Bruce Straley responsible for The Last of Us is making a new venture with a fresh title. His new project, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the first release of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on his previous work prioritizing dynamic AI partners.
An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey
Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as an adventure game blending puzzles and platforming. You guide a seasoned spellcaster, a protagonist who challenges typical power fantasies. The core idea stemmed from an interest in re-examining standard narrative tropes.
"What if you lacked the sword or shield? What if you were physically limited? An aging witch, for instance?" posed the creative lead. "The concept seemed incredibly compelling to question the definition of a protagonist. Being a hero means persevering against problems, including traits like selflessness and unwavering will."
Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction
While the game looks different at first glance, its core innovation is a direct continuation the technology seen in The Last of Us. The entire project was inspired by a key thought: "How could one create an AI partner even more reactive and adaptive based on player actions?"
The companion creature that accompanies Gertie is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a toddler that interacts through a multi-phase process. First, it exhibits curiosity, which can cause silly antics. Next, it moves into a mimicry phase. Finally, it observes and assimilates to learn how things work.
- For example: Should the beast observe an object being placed, it understands the action absent the context.
- This leads it to start picking up various things and test fitting them, repeating what it saw.
- True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving a challenge, creating a genuine learning moment.
A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative
Such advanced AI seeks to generate individualized narrative moments. The creative lead highlights that Coven of the Chicken Foot is intended as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story.
"Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns into this game, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The liveliness between these characters lies in the fact that you as a player experiences personal anecdotes and outcomes compared to my playthrough."
This focus on emergent, character-driven storytelling, this upcoming game represents both an evolution and a drastic departure from the creator's iconic past work. This adventure is currently in development for Windows PC.
