Chainsaw Man Dominates American Box Office in First Weekend

Did Sony repeated their success? In the wake of the box office performance of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million at the box office, the latest Chainsaw Man film has officially crossed the $100 million mark internationally, reaching a worldwide gross of $108 million during its debut. This feature beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9M).

Notable Domestic and International Earnings

Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It grossed $18.2M domestically after a robust $5.2 million Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced film added $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of $60.4M via Sony ($43.1M international, $18.2M domestic). Official totals are still pending from Sony its complete box office tally.

Benchmarks to Other Successful Anime Films

Promotional firm an industry expert had earlier commented, contrasting the feature's anticipated earnings to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the North America in 2022 and debuted with a nearly identical $18M domestically. This movie's debut weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108M worldwide total presently stands a bit short of the earlier film's $166.6 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will match the numbers of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a huge win for the studio.

Fan Engagement Efforts Drive Success

Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged audience interaction to boost their supremacy at the animated movie market. The movie's advertising push began at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a major presence at the New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, fan raffles, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and influencers alike after the concluding day of the convention.

What’s Next

This year marks a significant period for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional animated movie premiering in 2025 in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
