As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, joins a young group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's elusive Triple Crown.
His last year was limited to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing mainly at first, he has since transitioned to third base.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the USA, he blasted a game-tying homer in the early innings, helping Japan's 3-2 championship win.
The power hitter is slated to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
