Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced outrage after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The clip, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in defense or intelligence positions.
"As we did, you all took an oath to defend and defend this national charter," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that break the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Reply
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders React
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a combined statement censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our nation with exceptional national pride and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical social media posts and retract his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who value this country and made an pledge to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important duty."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising troops to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "We see current representatives of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the president's legal commands."
She added: "The purity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
