Heavy Precipitation Worsen Conditions for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, Officials Warn
Intense rains over the last seven days have compounded the extremely difficult circumstances of the vast number of displaced Palestinians in the territory, as reported by humanitarian organizations.
"Terrible" Night Poses Serious Risks
A official characterized the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with downpours so severe that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the terrain.
"The recent weather was exceptionally terrible for the people. The heavy rains were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," noted the spokesperson.
There is significant concern that young ones living in makeshift shelters in damp garments will contract hypothermia and various illnesses.
Casualties and Extensive Damage
Health authorities have stated that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have lost their lives in building collapses caused by the severe weather.
Additional accounts suggest a greater number of casualties. Spokespeople said that numerous residential buildings had collapsed completely and many others had sustained partial collapse.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by rains.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces inundated.
- Countless residents compelled to relocate again.
Aid Distribution Deemed Insufficient
Agencies have increased distribution of tarpaulins, warm covers and clothes after the truce commenced, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"We are working relentlessly to deliver that assistance and to hand it out, but the size of the necessities is so vast that we are faced with many thousands of families and children who are genuinely struggling every night," warned one spokesperson.
Long-Term Challenges and Agreement Terms
The second phase of the agreement includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the pullback of military forces, and other terms.
Relief bodies have underscored the imperative for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to address immediate and long-term needs."
The hostilities was triggered by an assault in late 2023. Following campaigns have resulted in a significant number of lives lost in the region, based on official data.
