A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.

The purpose behind the attack remains unclear and no arrests are in custody, as per the official statement.

The Fatal Incident

Police revealed that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the site supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, as per local media.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and clad in what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Important clues, like bullet casings, were discovered at the scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were ready to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the citizens to not sharing explicit content from the scene, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's young family.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that premiered on a South African broadcasting platform.

Beyond his role as a presenter, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including protective services, supplying VIP protection services and managing safety for major functions across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in building administration and was involved in building evictions.

A government minister remarked he was angry and saddened by Stock's killing.

"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even spoke up against me and my policies as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.

A public representative stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A media executive expressed that "Stock was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every performance. His dedication to creativity left an profound impact."

In a statement, the network he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
