The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
