The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
