The Reform UK leader Accuses Teachers of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that teachers would go on strike within weeks a Reform UK election victory, charging that they are “poisoning our kids” by telling students that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and white children oppressors.
At a gathering for a private US Christian college, Farage outlined his perspective on the UK education system, stating that the “Marxist left” had “now in control of our education system”.
“I expect a teachers’ strike soon after securing a victory,” Farage commented during a Q&A session.
“They are poisoning our kids. They are telling them to be ashamed of their country. They inform an eight-year-old black child that he is oppressed and a white child of the same age that he is an oppressor. They create division, not uniting us. They are feeding this harmful mindset.”
In response to these assertions, the head of a major education union rejected the notion that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “nonsense”. Kebede noted that industrial action must relate to educators’ working conditions, and doubted whether the party would target these right after taking office.
“The politician has crafted his political career on coded rhetoric and now, like Trump, he is lining up teachers and their organizations for a fight,” Kebede stated.
“This is highly reckless. Neither I nor our union – push critical race theory as he’s suggesting … If he were to lead the government he would sell out our public services, including education … and he would be a disaster for students and learning.”
The party, which tops surveys by about 10 points, has provided limited specifics on its educational plans and seems not to have designated an education lead.
However, his comments indicated the party would overhaul the educational framework. He said: “We have got a massive job with schooling – truly monumental. Moreover, it won’t happen quickly; it requires years, a long-term effort to reform.”
He stated that younger generations are receptive to analytical thought, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Honoring a conservative activist, Farage said: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that there are two points of view and you make up your own mind as opposed to current practices where views are labeled good or bad. This is a huge undertaking in both Britain and America.”
Reform has previously clashed with a major educators’ organization, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and dismissed Farage as “a cheap imitation”.
The politician has charged Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … an individual intent that young minds be corrupted through education, their thinking tainted regarding national issues” and has argued that the organization seeks to brainwash youth opposed to his party.
Roughly a million individuals work in schools in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the remainder being assistants and administrative personnel. The major education union has about 450,000 members.
National strikes over teacher pay and conditions in 2023 caused widespread disruption in educational institutions and extensive missed instruction for children.
During the American gathering, Farage also vowed to promote the online educational material of the institution in the UK. He said such groups were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I am serious. I’ll assist garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of young people to these educational programs. I pledge this tonight and I will follow through.”
The college, a religious educational establishment, offers free courses. Its website states: “Comprehensive learning is vital for well-being and to maintain the benefits of freedom. The college furnishes these beautiful courses for no charge to every interested learner.”
